Crossovers have become some of the most popular vehicles for Americans to drive. In fact, in 2018, crossover sales increased about 18 percent over the previous year. More drivers who want the efficiency and convenience of a sedan but the space and cargo capabilities of an SUV are turning to crossovers as a way to meet all their needs.
Still, not all crossovers are built the same. If you’re looking for a crossover that can fit car seats, friends, and all your cargo, check out these five vehicles with exceptional space.
Honda CR-V
The Honda CR-V is an extremely popular crossover for many reasons, including its ample cargo space. The 2018 CR-V has more than 39 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up, and an impressive 75 square feet of space when the seats are folded down. The CR-V also has 40.4 inches of legroom in the rear seats, making it a good option for families with teenagers or those who use bulky rear-facing car seats. Yet, the space is only one of the CV-R’s many highlights. Its impeccable safety record, available all-wheel drive and affordability mean that the CR-V regularly ranks among the most highly-rated crossovers. Honda fully redesigned the CR-V in 2017 giving the vehicle better performance and a more upscale interior, so opt for that model or later.
Suburu Forester
The Subaru Forester is a favorite for off-road enthusiasts and people in cold climates because of its standard all-wheel drive. The Forester also has plenty of cargo space for all your extracurricular equipment, with 34.4 cubic feet available in the 2018 model, a spec that increases to just under 75 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded down. With 38 inches of rear legroom, most passengers will be comfortable riding in the back seat. The 2019 redesign updated the cabin, increased the available cargo space by about 1 cubic foot, and made more horsepower standard, but discontinued the turbocharged engine option.
Nissan Rogue
The Nissan Rogue is a spacious crossover with plenty of options that make it desirable to a variety of drivers. The 2018 Rogue has 38 inches of rear legroom and more than 39 cubic feet of cargo space, which increases to 70 square feet when the seats are folded down. The Rogue Sport is slightly smaller, with has 23 cubic feet of cargo space (increasing to 60), but offers a more responsive driving experience while still packing a lot of space. In addition to the Sport, the Rogue is available as a hybrid. The 2016 and 2017 Nissan Rogue models came with an optional third-row, so if you’re looking for additional seating, give those model years a try.
Toyota RAV4
If you’re looking to combine towing ability and cargo space, the RAV4 is a good crossover selection. The 2018 model increased the RAV4’s towing capacity to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped. That’s enough to move a boat or small trailer. The RAV4 can also carry plenty on the inside, with 38 cubic feet of cargo space increasing to 73 when the seats are folded down. It also has 37 inches of legroom in the rear seats. Eco-conscious (and budget-conscious) drivers will appreciate that the RAV4 is also available as a hybrid.
Volvo XC60
If you’re looking for a more up-scale crossover that still has great storage, the XC60 is a good choice. Although many luxury crossovers have less cargo space than their mainstream competitors, the Volvo XC60 has a respectable 38 inches of rear legroom and 22 cubic feet of cargo space (increasing to 63 cubic feet with the seats down). Standard all-wheel drive, outstanding styling, and the introduction of a plug-in hybrid in 2018 make the XC60 great crossover.
