The Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class: What you need to know

From 2017 to 2020, Mercedes released great editions of the CLA-Class. In this guide, you’ll discover what each version offers.

The Benefits of Buying a Used CLA-Class

A used Mercedes CLA-Class is a more compact automobile that has the feel of a sports car. Those looking for a performance machine will be impressed by its sporty features; however, the elegant design will resonate with fans of the traditional Mercedes.

The CLA-Class saves gas on the road. Every base trim has a fuel-efficient engine. With a CLA-Class, you’ll get the COMAND console; this is a patented system by Mercedes and includes navigation updates and CarPlay or Android Auto.

The 2020 Mercedes CLA-Class

The 2020 CLA-Class has three stylish trims. The AMG trim adds features that improve handling and acceleration.

Performance

The base trim uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine; it can produce up to 382 horsepower on the road. This CLA-Class also boasts an eight-speed automatic transmission system.

A typical 2020 CLA-Class will have front-wheel drive as its standard. However, an all-wheel drive is available too. It’s the only option for the CLA 45.

Comfort

In the comfort department, the base model has plush leather seats and a comforting automatic climate control system. In addition, Mercedes offers valuable upgrade packages for select trims. They add wonderful luxuries like heated seats with ventilation. It’s equipped with a panoramic sunroof and a dual-zone climate control system too.

Design

Every 2020 Mercedes CLA-Class has an MBUX infotainment system. However, some trims will have a 7-inch instrument cluster, and others will have a 7-inch touch screen. There are three ways to use the system. You can tap the screen, the main touchpad controller, or the second touch controller on the steering wheel. The 2020 model also has Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and an HD radio.

Utilities

The cargo bay is only 11.6 cubic feet, so it’s not large like the previous models. However, the trunk has plenty of space for bags and groceries.

The 2019 Mercedes CLA Class

From a technical standpoint, the 2019 CLA-Class and the 2020 CLA-Class are quite similar. Though, if you select an upgraded 2019 model, you’ll get additional perks. For example, the Premium package adds blind-spot monitoring, keyless features, and heated seats.

Performance

In a 2019 CLA-Class, you’ll speed to destinations. This model has a four-cylinder 208-horsepower engine. It can go from zero to 60 miles per hour in about 6.5 seconds.

This version of the CLA-Class has a braking system and the steering system like the 2018 edition. However, the 2019 version handles a bit differently on the road. The controls for the 2019 model are very stable, so you’ll feel comfortable maneuvering it around curves.

When compared to other models, this edition of the CLA-Class has a weaker transmission system. It allows rollback on hills, and it responds slowly on highways.

The 2018 Mercedes CLA Class

The 2018 Mercedes CLA-Class handles well on the road. However, it’s designed like the 2020 version. The Premium package makes the 2018 model a better vehicle.

Performance

Thanks to its quick-shifting transmission, this CLA-Class reaches top speeds fast. During performance tests, it clocked in at 60 miles per hour in about 6.4 seconds.

The braking system for this model is easy to use. On average, at 60 mpg, it brings the vehicle to a complete stop at approximately 121 feet. This is the baseline for a typical car in its class.

In terms of handling, the steering system is very balanced. It makes sharp turns effortlessly, and its precise articulation makes parking a breeze.

Comfort

Every seat in the cabin is bolstered well. However, the cushions could provide better support. The faux leather upholstery on each seat adds flair, but it may feel sticky on a hot day.

This model has a fine-tuned suspension system for basic cracks and potholes. However, the suspension system needs a few tweaks for fast-paced highway hazards. A seam or grooved pavement on the highway could make the vehicle swerve.

The cabin stays quiet because it has superb noise-canceling properties. No matter if you drive fast or slow, you’ll barely hear ambient sounds on the road.

Design

The interior layout is sleek and practical. This model has a giant infotainment screen with ergonomic climate control knobs and clear gauges.

There are wide door openings in the front of the cabin, so it’s easy to enter and exit the vehicle. The openings in the back of the cabin are a bit low, however. The roof slopes over the back seats, so this could cause problems for tall passengers.

Everyone will feel cozy in the cabin because the layout is roomy. There is plenty of legroom behind the front seats.

The CLA provides good visibility from the driver’s seat. The sloping roofline can reduce visibility during parking situations. However, the rearview camera can help you scope the surroundings beyond the roofline.

Utilities

The shifter is positioned in a convenient spot near the steering column, so you’ll have plenty of storage space for essential items. In terms of larger cargo, you can place these items in the truck. The truck is 13.1 cubic feet, and it has shrouded hinges and a wide opening.

The 2017 Mercedes CLA Class

A 2017 Mercedes CLA-Class has more safety features than its rivals. This is a top-level luxury vehicle, and it’s more affordable than other automobiles in its class.

Performance

On extended highways, the transmission shifts gears quickly, and the steering system responds with precision during cornering maneuvering. From a technical standpoint, this edition of the CLA-Class doesn’t perform like a subcompact car. It has distinctive athletic qualities that are very similar to a traditional hatchback.

In the suspension department, three systems are available for this particular model. You can buy it with an adaptive, sport-tuned, or standard suspension system.

This CLA-Class has several driving modes too. In Sport mode, the engine produces more power, and it pushes the exhaust system to the limit.

The braking system is performance-driven and extremely sensitive. It will respond quickly if you barely tap the brake pedal.

Comfort

The seats in the front of the cabin are cozy and supportive during long rides, but the rear seats are less comfortable. In both sections, there is plenty of legroom for front and rear passengers. However, the ceilings will limit headroom in the back. Also, there is no armrest in the center of the cabin.

Design

You’ll find plastic panels on the dash and plastic pieces around the center console. These malleable materials have a premium vibe, so they don’t blemish the vehicle’s luxurious style.

When compared to previous CLA-Class models, the 2017 edition has a much larger cabin layout. The COMAND navigation interface got a big update; it runs software like other popular Benz models. In addition, a touchpad is no longer available. Instead, this version of the console has multiple buttons and a knob.

If you’re looking for a luxury vehicle that won’t break the bank, the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class is definitely worth considering. Pick your favorite CLA-Class, and conquer the road.
